Destiny has become the biggest new gaming franchise in history, publisher Activision Blizzard has claimed.

While specific sales numbers have yet to be revealed, it has sold a combined $500m through to retailers and digital stores, and has become the highest-selling day one digital console release ever.

"Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny," said CEO Bobby Kotick.

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg added the company is "more confident than ever" that Destiny will become one of this generation's most "iconic" franchises - and the firm's next billion dollar brand.
